Legal London
18th February 2016
On the 18th February 2016, 47 members of Aston Clinton U3A visited parts of “Legal London”, setting off from Aston Clinton at 08.15am. As it was school half term, the coach made very good time into London and so we had a small extra tour across Waterloo Bridge and then back across Blackfriars Bridge before meeting our guide.
We were shown around Gray’s Inn and Lincoln Inn, and after lunch saw the Old Bailey and then visited the Royal Courts of Justice.
We heard about Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626), who died of pneumonia whilst studying the effects of frozen meat, and learned about Spencer Perceval, who has been the only British Prime Minister to be assassinated when he was shot in the lobby of the House of Commons on 11th May 1812.
In the Royal Courts of Justice we were able to enter some of the court rooms where actual cases were being held.
Thanks to Trina for organising this trip.
